Hammertoe

What is Hammertoe?

Hammertoe is a condition in which the joints of one or more than one of the little toes become bent and deformed. This can cause the affected toes to be scrunched up, curled over one another, or pointed in an unnatural position. The most common cause of hammertoe is muscle and/or tendon imbalance.

What can start out as a mild condition can turn severe without treatment. Hammertoe does not improve on its own, so as soon as you feel or see that there is something different with your toes, you should see Dr. Vasiliadis.

What to Look For

When it comes to hammertoes, they’re quite distinct looking. Starting treatment is key to preventing any further issues. Treatment methods may vary depending on how mild or severe the case is. Check out the following section to learn more about the signs and symptoms of a hammertoe.

  • Pain where the toe meets the foot
  • Redness and inflammation around the toe joint
  • Corns and calluses that have developed on top of the toe joint
  • Restricted movement in the toe
