Athlete’s Foot

What is Athlete’s Foot?

Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection that usually develops in between the toes. It’s often caused by foot sweat and tight shoes, hence the name. The rash is often described as scaly in appearance with other symptoms including itching, stinging, and burning.

The infection is very contagious and can easily be passed along from towels, socks, floors, and other materials that have been in contact with the affected foot. While there are over-the-counter creams that can help to combat athlete’s foot, prescription medication is sometimes necessary.

Prevention Tips

Keep Your Feet Dry
When you’re at home, stay barefoot. After physical activities, wash your feet thoroughly, especially in between your toes, and dry completely.

Change Your Socks & Shoes
If you have sweaty feet, change your socks twice a day and try to avoid wearing the same pair of shoes every day so that they have a chance to dry out.

Protect Your Feet In Public Settings
Always wear shoes or something over your feet in public areas like locker rooms, public showers, and pools.
