Gout

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis caused by urate crystals accumulating in joints. In most cases, this occurs at the joint in the base of the big toe, not unlike a bunion. Gout attacks often come and go and are very intense when they do appear. Redness, swelling, a burning sensation, and limited mobility are indications of gout, especially if these symptoms occur intensely and suddenly.

Potential Risk Factors

Diet
Uric acid causes the urate crystal buildup behind gout. This acid is the body’s solution for breaking down purines, which are found in foods like steak, organ meats, and seafood. Eating these foods in large quantities can increase uric acid in your body.

Obesity
Being overweight increases your body’s uric acid production, which raises your risk of gout.

Medications
Some medications used to treat hypertension can increase levels of uric acid in the body.

Family History
If a member of your family has been affected by gout, you may be more prone to developing the condition.
