Diabetic Ulcers

Diabetic Ulcers

What to Look For

Diabetic ulcers generally occur on the foot. An ulcer is an open sore that doesn’t heal correctly. In the case of a diabetic foot ulcer, improper healing is due to peripheral neuropathy and poor foot circulation, so the healing process is affected. An ulcer can form from anything such as cutting the bottom of your foot to stubbing your toe, causing it to bleed.

Sometimes, ulcers may not present themselves right away. You should always look for sores or lesions on your feet every day, as well as review your feet for signs of swelling, redness, pain, discharge, or another unusual symptom.

Limit Your Risks

It’s important to keep your skin moisturized and protected to best defend against injuries that could lead to ulcers. Wearing shoes and socks that fit well, performing foot checks, and having regular visits with Dr. Vasiliadis can all help reduce your chances of developing diabetic ulcers
