Podiatrist FAQs

Our feet are critical to our mobility and comfort in everyday life. They allow us to walk and stand up straight, but they are constantly being used. This can take a toll on your feet. The constant impact of lifting and lowering your feet while you walk can lead to a variety of issues with you feet. The result can be pain, discomfort, and limited mobility.

Foot issues are a common occurrence among Americans. The symptoms associated with foot issues often leave us with many questions and searching for relief. Our podiatrist office is always here to help you with things like heel pain, diabetic foot care, bunions, and more. However, as we mentioned before, if you are experiencing foot pain, discomfort, or difficulty walking, you probably have a lot of questions about your condition. Below, we have some of the most common questions we receive from our patients and their respective answers. Feel free to browse them and contact us if you have any further questions!

  • Why is foot care important for individuals with diabetes?

Diabetes can cause nerve damage and poor blood circulation to the feet. This leaves feet susceptible to infection and slow-healing wounds. Proper foot care can help prevent issues such as ulcers and amputations.

  • What are some essential foot care practices for diabetics?

Diabetics should inspect their feet daily for any signs of cuts, color changes, sores, or temperature changes. They should also clean their feet daily, moisturize their feet, wear comfortable walking shoes, and avoid walking barefoot.

  • What are the common causes of heel pain?

Heel pain is often caused by conditions such as plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the tissue connecting the heel to the toes), Achilles tendonitis, or heel spurs (bony growths on the heel bone). Your local podiatrist can provide you with the proper treatment to alleviate these issues.

  • How can heel pain be treated?

Heel pain can be treated with ice packs, wearing supportive shoes or orthotics, rest, over-the-counter pain medications, and stretching exercises. In severe cases, physical therapy and/or corticosteroid injections may be needed.

  • What are the symptoms of toenail fungus?

Signs of toenail fungus include discolored toenails, brittle or crumbly toenails, irregular toenail shape, and a foul odor.

  • How can toenail fungus be treated?

Toenail fungus treatment options include surgical removal of the nail, laser therapy, topical antifungal medications, and oral antifungal medications. A podiatrist can inspect your toenail fungus and determine the appropriate treatment option.

  • What is a bunion?

A bunion is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe. It occurs when the big toe pushes against the adjacent toe, causing the joint to protrude.

  • How can bunions be treated?

Bunion treatment options include wearing shoes with a wide toe box, using orthotic inserts, applying ice to reduce inflammation, and taking over over-the-counter pain relievers. In severe cases, surgery may be needed to realign the toe joint.
