Your Local Bunion Specialist
Serving Tonawanda, Niagara Falls, Grand Island, NY & Beyond

A bunion is a bony bump that forms on the big toe. This generally happens if the bones in the big toe become misaligned; the bump develops on the joint at the base of the toe and pushes the big toe to point towards the smaller toes. The bunion then causes a bump to appear on the side of the big toe, often accompanied with redness, swelling, or pain. Bunions are common, but without prompt diagnosis and treatment, they can negatively affect your mobility and quality of life.

If you suffering with a bunion, or if you have any of the symptoms of a bunion, including limited mobility of the affected foot or toe, we invite you to visit Dr. Vasiliadis at the Ambulatory Foot Care Center. Our bunion specialist is proud to see and serve patients throughout the Tonawanda, North Tonawanda, Niagara Falls, and Grand Island, NY area.

Potential Risk Factors

Ill-Fitting Shoes

Wearing shoes that are too tight or narrow can increase your chance of developing bunions. High heels in particular can greatly increase the risk.

Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis, which is an inflammatory type of arthritis, can be a cause of bunions.

Heredity

Inherited traits may also increase your risk of developing bunions.

The Bunion Treatment Process

There are several bunion treatment options available for our bunion specialist to utilize. They are relatively easy and affordable. The treatment options include:

  • Shoe Inserts - Padded shoe inserts can help evenly distribute pressure, reducing your symptoms.

  • Padding - Over-the-counter bunion pads or cushions can be helpful. They can be a buffer between your shoe and bunion, helping to reduce pain.

  • Ice - Icing your foot after you have been moving on your feet for a while can hep reduce inflammation, swelling, and soreness.

  • Medication - Common pain medications like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen sodium can help with bunion pain. Cortisone injections may also help.

  • Surgery - There are many surgery options and not any particularly most-effective one.
