At-Home Tips for Treating Plantar Fasciitis

Treating Plantar Fasciitis at Home

Millions of people across the globe struggle with foot problems, such as plantar fasciitis. It forms when the thick band of tissue connecting the heel bones to the toes becomes inflamed. If you’re struggling with plantar fasciitis, check out the following section to learn some at-home treatment options.

Rest & Ice:

As with any type of inflammation, rest is a vital part of the recovery process. Avoid activities that exacerbate the pain, and when resting, apply ice to the affected area. This will help to reduce inflammation and provide temporary pain relief. Make sure to wrap a cloth around the ice pack to prevent direct contact with your skin.

Stretching Exercises:

A little bit of stretching each day can go a long way. Performing calf stretches and toe curls will help to alleviate some of the tension in the plantar fascia and the surrounding muscles. Regular exercises can improve flexibility, reduce stiffness, and provide some sort of pain relief.

Supportive Footwear:

Wearing supportive and comfortable footwear is essential for individuals with plantar fasciitis. Opt for shoes with good arch support, cushioning, and shock absorption. Avoid high heels and flat shoes that provide little to no support. You can use orthotic inserts for additional support.

Night Splints:

Night splints can be worn while sleeping to maintain the foot in a flexed position. This helps stretch the plantar fascia overnight, which prevents it from tightening up. While initially uncomfortable, night splints can be very effective in reducing pain.

Massage & Self-Massage Techniques:

Massage therapy can be beneficial in easing tension in the muscles and promoting blood circulation. Roll a tennis ball or a frozen water bottle under your foot to massage the plantar fascia. Additionally, consider seeking professional massage therapy to target specific areas of tightness and discomfort.
